The crisis in Ukraine has prompted European football body UEFA, to hold an emergency meeting on Friday, where it would be decided if the 2022 Champions League final would be moved away from Russia.
This development is as a result of the invasion into Ukraine launched by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
According to reports, The EU Parliament wants Uefa to move the final fixture of the Champions League from the Gazprom Arena, which is scheduled to host the match on May 28.
Meanwhile, the World Cup play-offs are scheduled for next month and Russia plays against Poland, while Scotland host Ukraine on the same day.
However, with recent developments, the matches might either be postponed or cancelled altogether as fifteen of the most recent 23-man Ukraine squad play in their homeland.
Also, Ukraine’s domestic football league which was set to resume this weekend -after a winter break- will remain suspended.
Sweden are also in the play-offs and would meet Russia for a place at the World Cup finals, but the chairman of the Swedish Football Association Karl-Erik Nilsson, says a match in Russia was “almost unthinkable”.
