A Yobe State University (YSU) Damaturu student, Maryam Lawan Goroma, tragically passed away shortly after completing an examination in the Chemistry Department.
On April 27, 2023, Maryam reportedly slumped and collapsed, prompting those around her to rush her to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

While her classmate Bukar Maisandari stated that Maryam was in good health before the incident, Abubakar Zaid claimed that she had been experiencing stomach discomfort during the exam.
Maryam’s funeral prayer took place on April 28, 2023, at her family residence in Sabon Fegi, Damaturu, leaving the YSU community mourning the loss of a promising student.
