Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, was thrown into mourning on Saturday when a shocking incident occurred in the Emere area, near Itoko, Abeokuta South.
Olabisi Oriyomi, a popular auxiliary nurse known as Mama Dada, set herself on fire, leaving residents in shock and disbelief. The incident sparked a frenzy of speculation and grief among residents, who had heard rumors that Oriyomi was heavily in debt and had lost all hope of repaying the loans she had taken.
Sympathizers who gathered at the scene of the incident were left with many unanswered questions about what led the deceased to take such a drastic step.
Saturday PUNCH learned that Oriyomi was living with her 13-year-old child, Aduragbemi, in a rented apartment in Oke-Keesi, Emere, Abeokuta. She had six children, but only three survived – Michael, Pamilerin, and Aduragbemi.

Oriyomi’s close friend and guarantor, Agnes Adelani, who was with her earlier that day to plead with a loan company, expressed shock and disbelief at her friend’s death.
Adelani claimed that she was not aware of the extent of Oriyomi’s financial troubles and that she had been doing what she could to assist her friend.
However, a resident of Oke-Keesi, Fatimah Bisiriyu, blamed the deceased for her actions, suggesting that she should have taken her own life in a less destructive manner.
Bisiriyu further criticized Oriyomi for burning down the building where she had lived, saying that the landlady had been known for her generosity and hospitality towards those who could not afford to pay rent.
The victim’s husband, Julius Odunfa, also expressed his grief over the incident, describing it as unfortunate. According to Odunfa, he had been separated from Oriyomi for the past 20 years.
The incident has left the residents of Abeokuta in shock and mourning, as they struggle to come to terms with the tragic loss of a beloved member of their community.
