In a poignant twist of fate, a 70-year-old woman in Uganda, after giving birth to twins through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), finds herself grappling with abandonment as her husband disappears in the wake of this remarkable event.
Namukwaya, the resilient mother, expressed her joy, deeming the birth a “miracle” in interviews with local media. The hospital joined in celebrating the extraordinary success of her delivery, recognizing it as more than a mere medical achievement.
Having undergone the IVF procedure with a donor egg and her partner’s sperm, Namukwaya’s journey took an unexpected turn as the twins arrived prematurely at 31 weeks, requiring special care in incubators. Amidst the challenges of caring for the newborns, Namukwaya shared her heartbreaking experience with Uganda’s Daily Monitor newspaper.
The hurdles intensified as she disclosed that her partner abandoned her upon learning she was expecting twins. In her own words, “Men don’t like to be told that you are carrying more than one child. Ever since I was admitted here, my man has never showed up.”
This marks Ms. Namukwaya’s second delivery in three years, having given birth to a baby girl in 2020. Now, at the age of 70, she navigates the complexities of raising twins while grappling with the emotional toll of being abandoned by her husband during this challenging yet miraculous chapter of her life.
